Boss WL-20L Compact Wireless Instrument System

The Boss WL-20L is an easy-to-use ultra-compact wireless guitar system that eliminates the use of a guitar cable, freeing the player up to move about the stage without restriction.

Boss’ tech dept have really thought this one through; there are two different models of this wireless system available (there is also the WL-20) and both do exactly the same job, bar one difference. The Boss WL-20L has been designed to be used with instruments with active pickups, whilst the WL-20 is for use with passive pickups.

The logic behind this is all down to cable tone. The WL-20 simulates the subtle natural capacitive effect of using a 10ft plus cable with a passive instrument, dialling down the treble for the warmer tone. Active pickups, or instruments with onboard preamps such as electro acoustics, do not experience any discernible tonal change due to a cables capacitive effect, and so the WL-20L eliminates the cable tone simulation.

It's a subtle difference, but you would be surprised how you may not have noticed it until Boss’ boffins pointed it out!

So, if your instrument has active pickups, the WL-20L is the one for you.

The system is ridiculously quick and easy to set up. It comprises solely of a compact transmitter and receiver with ¼” jack connector, both with built-in rechargeable batteries. Once charged (using a standard USB adapter (5 V’500 mA or higher), all you need to do is dock the transmitter and receiver together for 10 seconds to automatically connect, and then plug the transmitter into your instrument and the receiver into your amp or pedal. The WL-20L not only provides freedom from the binds of instrument cables, but it also does so without compromising on sound quality. The system runs on a 2.4Ghz frequency band and offers an amazingly low latency of 2.3ms - so no signal dropouts, and no delay. And up to 14 WL-20L systems can be used in one space simultaneously without interference, so the whole band can be wireless and free to express themselves to the fullest.
