The Fender American Professional Jazz Bass does what it says on the tin! It is a highly professional bass that is well worth the price tag.
The Professional brings a modern touch to this classic bass. The bass comes in a Fender Elite Case which is as sturdy as you like and comes with TSA certified locks and a molded interior - ensuring protection and safety of your bass.
The finish on the bass is a very classy and vintage-inspired 3 Colour Sunburst with a lovely cream pick guard - adding a nice touch to this classic finish. The creaminess of the pick guard, as opposed to a solid white pickguard, gives it a lovely vintage look!
One of the first things I noticed, was the thinness of the neck. The slim, C-Shaped Maple neck is extremely thin and so smooth - you’ll notice this yourself when you jump and down the neck with so much ease!
As far as electronics go, the American professional doesn't boast anything overly spectacular, like it’s older brother the American Elite and it’s 3 Band EQ, but it has a pair of lovely V-Mod J-Bass Pickups designed by long-time Fender affiliate, Michael Bump. What these pickups do boast, however, are alnico 2 magnets (on the low end) and alnico 5 magnets (on the high end) which work better, generally, for achieving a classic old style sound - J & P Basses and Teles & Strats. The tones I was able to achieve on this bass were, again, nothing substantial, but gave me exactly what I expected which was a fantastic, lovely Jazz bass sound.
Having said that about the sound, the thing that does differ between this bass and an old style JBass is the playability. It seems like Fender have made this for the modern, professional musician (as the name may suggest) and the playability of this bass is true perfection. The speed that you can build up and play along the neck is staggering - it is so smooth and easy to move all over the bass - something that wasn't so easy to do with certain older J models which were chunkier. However, this only adds to it’s achievements and should not deter fans of old style Fenders. To summarise, this is a wonderful bass. The ease of which you can play it would make it suitable for any kind of player for any kind of music. As aforementioned, whilst not stunning me with the electronics (in terms of what they are offering for the price), the V-Mod pickups sound incredible and really give an incredible J-Bass sound.
Having seen the price, I wouldn’t jump at the sight of it and would, honestly, have to consider whether there are other basses available for the same price, but playing the bass changed my mind and I do really think that this bass is great value for money.
