Yamaha Live Custom Hybrid Oak 22” 6-Piece Drum Shell Pack - UZU Magma Sunburst

The Yamaha Live Custom Hybrid Oak 22” 6-Piece Drum Shell Pack has a unique style, sound, look and feel that we love here at Wembley Music Centre. Yamaha has taken a rich Oak foundation and used a hybrid concept to enhance its construction. The resulting Oak/Phenolic combination opens up the shell’s dynamic range, pushing its resonant and tonal properties to all-new highs. 

Each shell is made up of 7 ply layers; 6 of Oak and a centre ply made of a dense Phenolic sheet. This resin compound adds additional structural strength to the shell so its overall thickness can be reduced, resulting in a bigger, more open sound and increased attack. Each shell is equipped with tone-accentuating, noninhibitive dark silver hardware that lets the drum ring out in full voice. Yamaha’s exclusive Absolute lugs and 2.3mm thick DynaHoops look particularly attractive in dark silver and are well-complemented by the shell's black interior finish.

The bass drum features a brilliant Bass Enhancement weight system to optimise its sound. Each lug features additional weight that helps to focus its low-mid frequencies and tighten up its attack. The bass drum’s die-cast hooks also feature a noise-reducing insertion plate so all told, this bass drum is as tight and punchy as it comes. Each mounted tom features Yamaha’s brilliant Y.E.S.S III mounting hardware, developed to allow the shell to vibrate freely and significantly reduce any choke.

Last but certainly not least, we need to mention the absolutely mesmerising UZU Magma Sunburst finish. Uzukuri is a traditional Japanese wood finishing technique that emphasises the beauty of the grain, and the UZU technique takes this principle and applies it specifically to drums. This interesting finishing technique is applied as such; the softer areas in the wood grain are sanded down and a thin layer of black paint is applied to the entirety of the drum. This is then lightly sanded down so the black paint remains in the deeper recesses of the grain. A final finishing coat is then applied, but thin enough to allow the beautiful darker grain beneath to shine through. It's a wonderful finish for a wonderful set of drums.
