There's something quite comforting about the swoosh and graze of brush and snare. Although most commonly used by jazz and folk musicians, brushes are great tools for creating softer, less aggressive sounds and have recently seen a resurgence in popularity amongst lo-fi, experimental drummers.
Brushes are commonly made from metal and nylon. Metal brushes have a more defined attack while nylon brushes have a softer, more relaxed feel to them. Retractable brushes are great for protecting the brush wires when not in use, but also allow you to alter the density of the brush, resulting in a variety of different sounds.
