Hi-hat cymbals are sold as a pair and are traditionally used as the primary timekeeper around which rhythms are woven. They sit together on a hi-hat stand that features a pedal that allows the player to open and close the hi-hat cymbals, resulting in varying levels of intensity and dynamic range. They also have the definition of being the only cymbals in a traditional kit that can be played exclusively by your feet, freeing your hands up to create more complex patterns.

Smaller diameter hi-hat cymbals will be more responsive and sound brighter than larger diameter ones.. but they will invariably be quieter. Drummers with larger, louder, rockier kits will usually prefer larger hi-hats.
