There's a mode switch to optimize the Boss SY-1’s pitch tracking that enables you to opt between frequencies to make this pedal compatible with either guitar or bass - you simply select the appropriate instrument option on the pedal, and you're ready to go. As well as creating whole synth effects, there's also a blend control that allows you to mix your newly created synth tone in with your normal guitar or bass tone.

The SY-1 features a handy send/return loop which can be mixed in parallel with the main synth output. This feature allows you to use external effects pedals to add additional layers to your synth sound, or you can use the send as a direct output to route your synth sound to a different amplifier.
