Yamaha Live Custom Hybrid 22” 5-Piece Drum Shell Pack - UZU Ice Sunburst

This Yamaha Live Custom Hybrid 22” 5-Piece Drum Shell Pack is an unusual - and beautiful -  beast. Yamaha has built upon its advanced knowledge of Oak tonewood and developed a concept to enhance its construction - an Oak/Phenolic combination that blows each shell’s dynamic range wide open and optimises its resonant and tonal properties. This kit comes in a 2-up, 2-down configuration, and we think it has a fairly unique style, sound, look and feel that makes it a standout kit.

Each of these shells consists of 7 ply layers, three layers of Oak as the interior and exterior with a dense Phenolic sheet sandwiched in-between. The Phenolic sheet is a ply made from a resin compound that strengthens the drum’s structural integrity, enabling it to remain solid and sturdy while having the shell’s overall thickness reduced. In turn, this thinner style of shell is able to generate a bigger, fuller sound with an increased attack. Each shell is adorned with tone-accentuating, non-inhibitive black nickel hardware that lets the drum ring out in full voice and looks sublime. Yamaha’s exclusive Absolute lugs and 2.3mm thick DynaHoops look particularly attractive in this finish and are well-complemented by the shell's black interior finish.

The bass drum features a cleverly designed  Bass Enhancement weight system that uses weighted lugs to optimise its sound, focusing low-mid frequencies and tightening up its attack. Die-cast hooks feature noise-reducing insertion plates to further accentuate this bass drum's tight, punchy attack. Each of the three mounted toms are equipped with Yamaha’s brilliant Y.E.S.S III mounting hardware that allows them to vibrate freely by significantly reducing any choke.

Finally, we must wax on about how sensational the UZU Ice Sunburst finish looks. Uzukuri is a traditional Japanese wood-finishing technique that enriches the natural beauty of the grain, and Yamaha has taken this technique and developed it specifically for drums. This interesting finishing method is applied as such; the softer areas in the wood grain are sanded down and a thin layer of black paint is applied to the entirety of the drum. This is then lightly sanded down so the black paint remains in the deeper recesses of the grain. A final finishing coat is then applied, but thin enough to allow the beautiful darker grain beneath to shine through. It's a wonderful finish for a wonderful set of drums.
